Game 14 & 15 – Tribe Sweep, Sizemore Returns

The Tribe have improved to 11-4 on the year with the completion of their 3 game sweep against the Baltimore Orioles before they hit the road again to take on the 2nd place Kansas City Royals.

The highlight of the series though, was the return of Cleveland favorite, Grady Sizemore.  Boy did he come back in fashion.  2-4 with a homer and double.  We missed ya Grady.

Game 2: White Sox oust Indians 8-3

Well, if one thing can be said about the first two games of the season – it’s that our starting pitching has left something to be desired.

But that’s the thing about being this early in the year, what can really be said?  I can sit here and break down this that and the next thing all day long, it’s just far too early.   That’s why, it’s best to look at the positives and there are a few.
Offensively I like what I’ve seen so far.  I really think Santana is going to have a monster year, and it was great seeing Pronk get his first home run of the year out of the way so soon.  Honestly, when I look at this lineup and I add a healthy Grady Sizemore to it, I see some serious offensive potential.
But we all know what wins games.  Let’s say it all together now: PITCHING.  So far, not so good from our starters.   But tomorrow is another day.
Tribe look to salvage a game this series tomorrow after noon at 1:05PM.  GO TRIBE.

Rate my Fantasy Team

This year, my buddies wanted to try out Yahoo’s Fantasy Baseball (I know, I know).  I was outnumbered so I figured what the hell.  I’m not sure I’m going to like it nearly as much as MLB.com, but that’s a whole different blog entry…

Anyway, here’s my roster – thoughts are welcomed.

You’ll notice some Tribe love in their with Sizemore, Choo and Asdrubal Cabrera.  And I know Sizemore is on the DL, but I had to snatch him up.  I have faith in him recovering strong.  Also, you’ll notice CC Sabathia.  I still love him, what can I say.
And for some 90′s Tribe flavor, Jim Thome and Manny Ramirez coming off the bench.  Not too shabby.

Oddly Optimistic

Of course, a lot of the Cleveland Indians’ 2011 success weighs on whether or not Grady Sizemore can return to form after undergoing surgery on his left knee last year.  I’ve been paying attention to his Spring Training play, and while they were rightfully careful with Sizemore, I did like what I heard and saw.

So as of now, it looks like mid-April at the absolute earliest for Sizemore’s return.  Keep your fingers crossed Cleveland, we’re gonna need him.
But that being said, I do have an odd amount of optimism looking ahead at the 2011 season.  Just about every expert in baseball is predicting them to finish 4th or 5th in AL Central this year, but honestly I like that better.  If you remember in 2008, after coming off an incredible season in 2007, just about every media outlet had the Tribe winning the division again – and many had them winning the World Series.   And what happened you ask?  81-81. Good for a 3rd place finish.  You’d be surprised what you can accomplish when nobody is expecting anything.
Now, thats not to say that I’m expecting them to win the division, but I do expect them to improve greatly on their dismal  69-93 finish of last year.  And I personally think it’s only going to take around 85 games to win the Central this year and I fully expect it to go down to the wire.  It’s going to be a fun season, regardless.
It’s no secret the Indians are in a rebuilding phase, but the light is at the end of the tunnel, I’m sure of it.

WBC: Can USA improve on disappointing ’06?

In 2006, the world was treated to a little extra baseball.  With the inaugural tournament, fans of the game saw a whole new level of competition.  However, US fans found themselves disappointed.  Team USA went 3-3 and found themselves eliminated in Round 2.

Now, well into 2009 and March approaching quickly, the 2nd World Baseball Classic is just around the corner, and Team USA is eager to improve on their 3-3 record in 2006.

wbc hat.jpegHere’s a look at a likely starting lineup for Team USA:

Pedroia 2B
Jeter SS
Longoria 3B
D Lee 1B
Braun RF
Ludwick LF
Sizemore CF
McCann C

P -
Oswalt
Peavy
Kazmir
Danks
Verlander

I’d like to see Sizemore lead-off, but you really can’t argue with Pedroia in the number 1 spot in the order either.  Plus, having Sizemore in at the end of the order gives you that speed at the end of the lineup that has proven to be helpful for successful clubs.

The rotation is strong as well.  Anytime a guy like Justin Verlander is your #5 guy, I’d say you’re in pretty good shape.

Come on USA, keep your eye on the prize!
